About Gangasagar Mela

Gangasagar Mela is the largest fair celebrated in West Bengal. The Gangasagar Mela is fair is held where the Ganga and the Bay of Bengal form a nexus. Hence it is  named as Gangasagar Mela. Gangasagar mela is one of such festival of India celebrated during 13th – 15th January every year attracts thousands of pilgrimage from all around the world. The hosting state of West Bengal receives this fair with great pride and with devout. Thousands of devotees come over to seek righteousness at Sagar Island’s southern tip in West Bengal. Gangasagar mela 2019 is an annual gathering of Hindu pilgrims who look forward to this day.

When it is celebrated

It is held in the month of January-February, on the Ganga Sagar Island, at the mouth of the stream Hooghly in Bengal. It is gone to by a great many pioneers each year. The pilgrimage takes dip in the holy water of Ganga in the morning while worshiping Lord Surya. The carnival is held at the Segar’s Island which is situated on the tip of the Ganges delta at the top of the Bay of Bengal.

History

Ganga is the holiest river in Hindu mythology and gaga starts her expedition in Prayag and ends her long journey at this holy place and merges with Bay of Bengal. This place is also regarded as holy destination like Prayag and so it is believed that taking holy dip in this place can cleanse all your sins. The mela explored by various foreign tourists and tourist from other religious background and thus all cultures, heritages mishmashes to from a single one. The light and the sacred atmosphere creates and enigmatic ambience that attracts tourist every year. That can be proved by the constant increment of tourists every year. After taking the holy dip the devotees visit the temple of ‘Kapil Muni’ a well-known sage of Indian mythology.

Significance

Gangasagar mela is primarily a Hindu festive. It is said that the Gangasagar has seen its importance from Mahabharata time. If it is to be believed, the significance of taking a bath at the Sagar was explained to Bhisma by a learned sage. The virtue of purification of soul and evil deeds appealed every Hindu, and they practice the same. Foreigners too find it fascinating to witness a fair such as this. There is thereby different population also who seek to find solace here.

How to reach

Ganga Sagar can be approached from Kolkata either by road and then by a vessel, or by chartered luxury vessels starting from Namkhana & Kolkata.
